Steven Bate is a senior construction and engineering disputes specialist with more than 25 years' experience. A former law firm partner and non-practising solicitor, he now provides independent strategic and contractual consultancy to contractors, subcontractors, developers, funders, consultants and others involved in the construction sector.His work combines detailed understanding of contracts and disputes with a practical focus on risk, leverage, cost and outcome. The aim is not to create more process. It is to identify the real problem and find the most effective route through it.
MEDIATION
A structured route towards resolution
Steven completed CEDR Mediator Skills Training and was awarded CEDR Accredited Mediator status on 11 June 2013. As an expert level construction and engineering solicitor his career after accreditation remained principally focused on sector dispute work and party representation. He is now deliberately re-establishing his mediator practice alongside that established disputes experience.His approach is calm, commercial, pragmatic and reality-focused: clarify the issues, test the risks and help the parties explore a workable resolution.Direct enquiries and expressions of interest are welcome during the relaunch of his mediator practice.

Experience without the noise
Steven Bate has worked in construction, property-related and commercial disputes since 1997. He was admitted as a solicitor in 2000 and held a practising certificate until October 2024. He held senior roles, including partnerships at national and international law firms, before establishing Bee Consulted, and remains on the Roll of Solicitors as a non-practising solicitor.He has acted in hundreds of construction adjudications - more than he can now remember - and taken cases to the Court of Appeal and the House of Lords, before its judicial functions were transferred to the Supreme Court.He was accredited as a commercial mediator by CEDR in June 2013.His working style is direct, calm and commercially focused: identify the real issue, understand the leverage and find a workable way forward.
